I kissed Alice by Anna Birch & Victoria Ying
Publisher: Imprints (MacMillian)
Publishing Date: July 28th, 2020
Rhodes and Iliana couldn’t be more different, but that’s not why they hate each other.
Hyper-gifted artist Rhodes has always excelled at Alabama’s Conservatory of the Arts despite a secret bout of creator’s block, while transfer student Iliana tries to outshine everyone with her intense, competitive work ethic. Since only one of them can get the coveted Capstone scholarship, the competition between them is fierce. They both escape the pressure on a fanfic site where they are unknowingly collaborating on a graphic novel. And despite being worst enemies in real life, their anonymous online identities I-Kissed-Alice and Curious-in-Cheshire are starting to like each other…a lot.
When the truth comes out, will they destroy each other’s future?
Quick Star Rating: 4/5
If you are looking for a ya contemporary that not only has great lesbian rep, but is full of hate to love…sit with me for a second as I talk about the beauty above!
Rhodes and Iliana have a bad history, they come from very different life paths and one incident has caused bath blood between them. The kicker though is they share the same best friend Sarah. Now sprinkle in the award Iliana needs because her family can’t afford for her college any other way and Rhodes whose mother is trying to blackmail her daughter into her perfect dream instead of listening to what Rhodes wants.
So you personally get to the background of them bickering and how toxic and manipulative people can be without realizing it. It is a simple story in a way that it’s the girls realizing their true selves, but you also see the struggles of people on both sides and how no story is one sided and everyone has struggles. I also love that you get that fun fan fic part of the story through out as I’m a big fan of comics. Victoria Ying is a gorgeous artist and i’m definitely a new fan. Overall it’s a fast read with some important topics that doesn’t make it to heavy so I definitely recommend and hope to see everyone pick this up next month!
